The Power of the Post
Social media, to most people, is just a place to scroll through trends, see pictures, or watch funny videos. However, after running social media accounts for community groups, as well as volunteering with Dress for Success, I have come to see social media as something much bigger than that: a lifeline. For a nonprofit, social media is the way we take the intangible concept of "charity" and make it something concrete that people actually want to be a part of.
When I sit down to plan out a week's worth of posts, I’m not looking for "engagement." I’m looking for impact. I’ve seen, firsthand, the difference it makes when the public perception of a group shifts because of the type of posts we make. In the nonprofit world, your online presence is often the only way the public gets to "see" who you are. If we're not "out there" online, it’s incredibly difficult for the public to find out the good we're doing.
Why Branding Matters (Especially on a $0 Budget)
I know, from working with the women at Dress for Success, that we are not "just posting stuff." We are building a brand. A brand can give us trust, and trust is the currency we trade in as a nonprofit. When I post a picture of a client in her new interview suit, I’m telling a story.
Nonprofits need the community to donate and volunteer in order to keep the doors open. For some smaller ones, advertising is simply not in the budget. This is where social media steps in and is the great equalizer. It is free and extremely easy to use, and a small nonprofit can reach the same level of advertising as a large corporation. We use real content and authentic descriptions to build a relationship with our followers. This generates a level of loyalty so that the casual fan now becomes a loyal supporter. When people have a level of ownership in a brand, they are more likely to tell people about it and be supporters for years to come.
### Turning Followers into Impact
In my experience with these accounts, I have seen how a single well-thought-out post can alter the course of an organization. It is not just about the online world; it is about making an impact in the real world. This is what it looks like:
- Packing the house: By promoting our local events on social media sites like Instagram, our local events remain packed and our mission remains at the forefront.
- Gathering support: One single post on a fundraiser or a clothing drive can provide us with the specific donations needed to remain open.
- Attracting new talent: By promoting our current volunteers, I have seen how it can inspire new individuals to get on board.
- Proving the mission: Every post is an opportunity to demonstrate what we do and why people should care, transforming a bunch of strangers into a community.
Behind the Scenes: The Skill of the Grind
Managing a social media account is not just about posting anything and everything. It is about planning, analyzing trends, and adjusting strategies according to what is being accepted by the audience. Every post that I write about Dress for Success is carefully selected, knowing that posting anything inappropriate or mean-spirited can damage a brand's image.
This work has also helped me to grow as a person. Working with multiple accounts has shown me how to market myself, to prove that I have skills to be a professional. Content creation takes a combination of communication skills, data analysis, and time management skills. These are the same skills required to be a business owner or to manage a professional team.
The Future is Real
The most important lesson that I have learned through this process is that the best content is real. People don't want "corporate" or "perfect"; they want honesty. If you are looking to see an example of a strong mission statement being communicated, you can go to the Dress for Success website to see the foundation of the stories that we tell every day:

In other words, digital marketing is no longer a choice, but a necessity. It’s the way to be seen, heard, and remembered in a world where everyone’s staring at a screen. Whether you’re helping a non-profit, running a small business, or building your own career, social media is the most powerful tool you have to change the world around you.
